Earlier this year I returned to Nicaragua to continue my project, started in 2013, on CKDu (chronic kidney disease of unknown causes). I've documented this underreported disease in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Peru, India, and Sri Lanka, and it's encouraging that this year I returned to tell the story of how simple solutions, like rest, water, and shade is not only reducing the incidence of the disease among workers but has also increased productivity. This is a win-win for the workers and Ingenio San Antonio, one of the oldest sugarcane companies in Latin America and a dominant force in Nicaragua's economy. Creating stories and documenting social, racial, political, and economic injustices is part of what I and many of colleagues devote our lives to. It's rewarding when we witness even incremental positive changes to issues. Yet CKDu is still ravaging individuals, families, and communities around the hot agricultural zones of the globe, and so much more needs to be done to understand the epidemic and its causes, and implement solutions to protect our workers around the world.#ckdu #Nicaragua #LatinAmerica #sugarcaneworkers #agriculture
