Photo by @erintrieb / The U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, set to be completed by September 11, is raising the stakes for thousands of Afghans who worked alongside American troops and who are still waiting to receive their SIV (special immigration visa). The coveted SIV was initially approved in 2009 to assist Afghans with U.S. immigration, but has been plagued by a lengthy vetting process and changing politics in Washington. While 16,000 Afghan SIVs have been issued, 18,000 applications are currently backlogged, impacting a potential total of 53,000 individuals (including family members). By law, an SIV application should be processed within nine months, but it often takes up to five years. SIV applications are also often denied without explanation. In that time, thousands of Afghan allies remain vulnerable, facing threats from the Taliban and even from their own family members for their collaboration with the United States. In these 2016 photos, Mashal, who served as an interpreter for the U.S. special forces, embraces one of his three daughters at their home in Kabul. He patrols outside the home at night (second image). He says he was forced to go into hiding after receiving numerous death threats and after his house was hit in a drive-by shooting that he attributed to the Taliban. After being rejected multiple times and waiting several years after applying, Mashal’s SIV was approved in 2017 and he now resides with his family in the U.S. To protect the identity of my subjects, I photographed them turned away from the camera, and I worked mostly at night, when shadows and darkness helped conceal us.
