No shades necessary 😎 While staring directly at the Sun is never recommended, observatories let researchers get a better look. Active regions across the Sun’s surface contain material heated to several millions of degrees, while the blue-white areas identify some of the most energetic spots. During these observations in 2015, mircroflares went off, which are smaller versions of the larger flares that also erupt from the Sun’s surface. These microflares rapidly release energy and heat the material in the active regions. This image is a mosaic of smaller images combined from the observations of several telescopes. High-energy X-rays from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) are shown in blue; low-energy X-rays from @JAXAJP's Hinode spacecraft are green; and extreme ultraviolet light from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is yellow and red.
