In the 1980s, the Davis family purchased an investment property near North Williams Avenue, once known as the city's Black Broadway. Before they could repair and rent it out, the city of Portland deemed it blight and bulldozed it. Over the past decade, the neighborhood has rapidly gentrified, leaving only a few Black-owned businesses and original residents. In the fall, I traveled to Portland with writer @ninasabina24, to meet families who are taking it upon themselves to make this history better known and ensure that the memory of Williams Avenue doesn’t disappear.Check out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
