Photos by David Chancellor @chancellordavid / A Kenya Wildlife Service ranger holds the skin of a lioness, which died of natural causes, recently removed from a wooden panel where it was stretched to dry in the sun. Lions have always played an important part in Samburu and Maasai culture here in Kenya. Traditionally it was viewed as a rite of passage (known as ala-mayo) to kill a lion to demonstrate dominance, a symbol of strength and power, and thus pass into warrior-hood as a moran. But now this has changed, and lions are no longer hunted ceremonially. (However, when lions kill livestock occasionally, they'll still be hunted as revenge.) I’ve worked for many years now with @ewasolions which does a magnificent job of mitigating human-wildlife conflict. When lion deaths occur, either by natural mortality or conflict related, these skins are taken by Kenya Wildlife Services, which dries and holds them securely until communities request them for ceremonies. Once the ceremony is over, they are returned. Thus, important cultural traditions can be maintained without placing further threat upon the fragile lion populations here in northern Kenya. To see more follow me @chancellordavid.
