Photo by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto Summer in the city: One of the best ways to keep cool on a hot August day in Tokyo, Japan, is cruising Tokyo Bay aboard a yakatabune. Guests on these low-slung pleasure boats may do a double-take as they glide past a dead ringer for the Statue of Liberty, standing guard at the entrance of the harbor. Not to be confused with America's Lady Liberty, this one is actually a replica of a replica... To celebrate Japan's ties with France, in 1998 a copy of the statue was loaned for the year to Tokyo. That statue came all the way from the Île aux Cygnes in Paris, where she had stood after being gifted to France by U.S. citizens in 1889 to commemorate the French Revolution. It was returned to Paris in 1999, but due to its popularity in Japan, a duplicate was built in 2000 and returned to the Odaiba Marine Park. From a distance, it appears just as large as the original; its positioning, with the Rainbow Bridge as a backdrop, creates an optical illusion. But viewed up close, it's clear she's much smaller, standing a mere 12.25 meters (yards), compared to her sister in New York, towering at 93 meters (yards). #Tokyo #Japan #TokyoBay #StatueofLiberty #yakatabune
