Archaeological finds in the gulch reveal thousands of years of human habitation, primarily as the home to the ancestral Puebloan people. It still contains nearly fully intact homes, kivas, and granaries. Concentrations were especially high in the Basketmaker II period starting in 500 B.C.E. The Bears Ears National Monument area, originally designated by President Obama, was reduced by 85 percent under an executive order in 2017, but it will likely be reinstated under the current administration this year.
