Photo by @dzalcman / Members of a color guard of Native women service members pay their respects at the burial site of six Rosebud Sioux children who were laid to rest in their traditional territory last month. They were among the earliest wave of Native children sent to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, in Pennsylvania, the first of hundreds of government boarding schools meant to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children into white, western culture. Conditions were bleak, and students were routinely exposed to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. About 200 Native children died during the 39 years that Carlisle operated, and most were buried on the school grounds—now a U.S. Army barracks. After years of lobbying, a group of Lakota youth were able to push for the repatriation of their relatives after 140 years, and their remains made the journey home with them last month.
