Photographed in West Virginia, this cluster of young, hot, blue luminous stars appears here above a maple tree in an eight-second exposure. The Pleiades is the most obvious star cluster to the naked eye and, at a distance of about 440 light-years, one of nearest to Earth. Swipe to see an image taken a few minutes later, when the rest of constellation Taurus was rising. The larger V-shaped grouping right above the trees is the Hyades, representing the face of the celestial bull. At 153 light-years away, this is the closest star cluster to Earth. The bright orange star Aldebaran, marking an eye of the bull, is unrelated to the Hyades and much closer to Earth. The name Aldebaran comes from Arabic, meaning “the follower,” as the star follows the Pleiades across the sky with the Earth’s rotation.
