They've adapted to the region's extreme weather: In the -20°F (-29°C) harsh winters of Mongolia, they develop a thick, shaggy protective coat; in summer, they shed the coat and rarely sweat, thereby helping them to conserve fluids in the over 100°F (38°C) temperatures. Like Arabian camels, they don't need much water to survive. Bactrian camels were instrumental in carrying goods over the Silk Road from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century.
