Many of the 7,000 who had been fighting in what was a 50-year war saw this as a promising time to be reunited with family they hadn't seen in decades or finally start their own. In a tent at "demobilization" camp in Mutatá, Colombia, Rosa Gutiérrez spends time with her 10-month-old daughter, Isabella, while her mother, Doralina Maze, shares a video call with another relative. Rosa was reunited with her mother after eight years with FARC forces. "I don't want to live away from my mother anymore," she says. "We are now going to be one big family."Over the past few months, I traveled across Colombia for @natgeo to document the lives of ex-FARC mothers and their children five years after they signed the peace accords. I've been following this story since 2014, leading up to the peace agreement in 2016—a watershed moment for the country and the region. But the country remains divided over the accord. Former rebels are still living in improvised encampments in remote rural areas while others who seek a new life in cities face stigmatization and have few opportunities. Key facets of the agreement remain unfulfilled by the current government; only 28% of its measures have been implemented.
