Photos by @katieorlinsky | This is Crater Lake in Katmai National Park, Alaska. See more images of the park, both from today and a hundred years ago, in our story online (link in my bio). Katmai holds the Novarupta volcano—the largest eruption of the 20th century. The catastrophe displaced the area's mainly Alutiiq indigenous population, and decimated massive swaths of land, including the famous Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (seen then and now in images 2 and 3). In the summer of 2018 I joined a National Geographic Society expedition of archeologists, scientists, and park rangers, who followed in the footsteps of an expedition that studied the eruption's aftermath approximately a century ago. The results and discoveries of that original expedition played an important role in the early days of the United States’ conservation movement, and inspired then President Theodore Roosevelt to create Katmai National Monument, the beginnings of the national park we know today.Check out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
