The fossil is from Can Mata—the largest active landfill in Spain's Catalonia region, and it keeps getting bigger. The soil at Can Mata holds fascinating fossils from about 11.2 million to 12.5 million years ago, including species of ancient primates found nowhere else in the world. Paleontologists have been monitoring the dump since 2002; with each expansion, they're offered access to depths that would otherwise be out of reach.
