In those precarious rural landscapes where access to electricity or running water can be lacking, health care is also a problem, particularly for the aging population living along the line. The Matvei Mudrov "hospital train"—named after Matvei Yakovlevich Mudrov, a 19th-century pioneer in Russian medicine—is operated by Russian Railways and employs about 15 doctors and nurses who travel to the country's far eastern reaches twice a year along the line. They offer specialized services in the train: x-rays, ultrasound, neurology, and ophthalmology. For many residents of some of Russia's most remote villages, the Matvei Mudrov train represents a rare connection to the rest of Russia.
