Photo by @williamodaniels | In 2013 patients queue in the corridor of a medical train, awaiting testing results, at Loptcha station, a village on the Baikal Amur Magistral railway line—which crosses Siberia and the Russian Far East for more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 mi). In those precarious rural landscapes where access to electricity or running water can be lacking, health care is also a problem, particularly for the aging population living along the line. The Matvei Mudrov "hospital train"—named after Matvei Yakovlevich Mudrov, a 19th-century pioneer in Russian medicine—is operated by Russian Railways and employs about 15 doctors and nurses who travel to the country's far eastern reaches twice a year along the line. They offer specialized services in the train: x-rays, ultrasound, neurology, and ophthalmology. For many residents of some of Russia's most remote villages, the Matvei Mudrov train represents a rare connection to the rest of Russia. This is an image from the National Geographic article "Train for the Forgotten." Follow me on @williamodaniels for more stories.
