The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, was constructed in 1940 and named after Edmund Winston Pettus, a former Confederate general, U.S. senator, and leader of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. The Pettus Bridge was also the site of the Bloody Sunday conflict on March 7, 1965, where Selma police attacked civil rights activists during their march to Montgomery.
