Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / The world’s largest indoor vertical farm, operated by Aerofarms at its headquarters in New Jersey, aims to raise vegetables sustainably year-round in the heart of an urban area. Leafy greens are grown on a substrate made from recycled plastic bottles. Water is misted on the roots from below, using a fraction than what would be needed outdoors, while LED lights allow growth around the clock.Vertical indoor farms could be a productive way to repurpose industrial areas, and they’re surfacing as a promising solution to food security in our crowded cities. In my latest story for National Geographic magazine, called "The End of Trash," I covered such circular economy solutions. By designing waste out of the production system, circularity aims to keep resources and materials in use while regenerating natural systems. Follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to learn how we can make a difference and the promising solutions to the pressing issues facing our planet. #environment #circulareconomy #farming #usa #lucalocatelliphotoCheck out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
