Photo by @dzalcman / This is Marcel Ellery, a survivor of the Marital Indian Residential School, which he attended from 1987 to 1990. His portrait is a double exposure, superimposed with an image of the school grounds. Last week Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan announced it had discovered 751 unmarked graves where Marieval once stood. The accessibility of ground-penetrating radar technology means that Indigenous communities across Canada and the U.S. will be able to scan the sites of former residential and boarding schools for unmarked and mass graves. The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission convened in 2015 to investigate the legacy of the boarding schools—an estimated 4,100 of the 150,000 First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children forcibly sent to these government-funded, church-run institutions were recorded as having died while in school custody. That figure was likely a dramatic underestimate. When I interviewed Marcel in 2015, he told me, “I ran away 27 times. But the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] always found us eventually. When I got out, I turned to booze because of the abuse. I drank to suppress what had happened to me, to deal with my anger, to deal with my pain, to forget. Ending up in jail was easy, because I’d already been there.”For more about the history of the boarding school system in North America, please follow @dzalcman + @signsofyouridentity.
