案例简介：Photos by Karine Aigner @kaigner | There’s a place that has a bit of my heart. It’s a place where the longer you stay, the more likely you are to fall for it. I went to Cuba to understand a complicated story I’d been introduced to in Miami—though now illegal, the long tradition of trapping wild songbirds, often used in singing competitions. Cuba is a land of contrasts. Fiercely proud—Cubans are some of the most spirited humans I’ve ever met. Well educated, passionate, and so alive; we danced in the street, we drank coffee out of egg-size cups, we shared meals and had long heated discussions about politics, life, inequalities, and economic realities—and birds. The birds, I learned, are an escape. A bit of beauty in a hard landscape. A small piece of nature held close. The Cubans love their birds. And, for a handful of Cuban men, the birds are more: they are family, a hobby, an escape, a nostalgic memory. From intricately handmade cages to secret song training methods and care, there is deep art in the ownership of birds. Yes, they are taken out of the wild. Yes, the traditional cages are small. These birds are shared between countries—and numbers are diminishing. I learned that before we judge, we must look deeper. Cuba is cut off from the trade world. For three months, I could not buy an umbrella or a notebook to write in. There were none. I met a beautiful country, rich with history… and saw what it is like to live in a place where on some days, simple things were just not available.Across the planet, wildlife is trafficked. We must endeavor to understand "the why," and come up with solutions that fit the situation.
