Parisians had used the Seine for bathing and washing since antiquity, but in 1923 swimming was officially banned because of the dangers from pollution and motorized boat traffic. Now France is determined to clean up the river in time for the 2024 Olympic Games. Water treatment plants have been upgraded. An underground reservoir is being built to capture storm runoff. Officials are regularly testing water samples to see if they meet health standards. Over the summer I saw Olympic test events with athletes swimming in the river, but water samples revealed variable results, and some events had to be canceled. If the cleanup of the river goes as planned, not only will events be held in the Seine during the Olympics, but swimming areas will also be opened once again to the general public starting in 2025. After a century when industrial use took priority over Parisians’ access to the Seine, city dwellers are slowly reestablishing their relationship to the river. I recently followed a special event called the Traverseine, which closed off motorized boat traffic in Paris to allow kayaks, paddleboards, and dragon boats to navigate past the famed monuments in the heart of the city.
