Photo by @celestesloman / This is a virtual portrait of Fiana Garza Tulip, who is based in Brooklyn. While quarantining in New York City, Tulip received texts from her mother, Texas-based respiratory therapist Isabelle Odette Papadimitriou, who died of COVID-19 on July 4.In December and January I documented six families that lost relatives to the COVID-19 pandemic for National Geographic. Writer Katie Sanders explores what it means to say goodbye from a distance, whether that is a hazmat suit, via Zoom, or through text message.Since it was too risky to travel and take these portraits in person, we decided to create virtual portraits from my Brooklyn studio. This approach seemed fitting because the story focuses on distance, separation, and communication through devices, so I created a still-life setup with my iPad surrounded by white flowers, to commemorate those lost. I FaceTimed with each of the families and directed them in the frame while I took photographs of the setup.Check out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
