Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / Piles of discarded wool await recycling in Prato, Italy, a small town in Tuscany that's been the epicenter of wool recycling for centuries. Today 15% of the world’s recycled textiles come from Prato. The recycling process starts with collection and sorting of textile. These piles of rags have been carefully selected by experienced workers, separating the clothes into different colours. Once packaged, some colours may end up sitting in a warehouse for decades, waiting to be requested by the fashion industry. Only when demanded these tightly enveloped rags are unwrapped and put through recycling to create new raw wool.Prato was featured in my latest story for National Geographic magazine titled the "End of Trash." What was once considered a discarded item is now a commodity and a symbol for sustainable industrial production. Please follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to find out more about the new technology solutions for a more sustainable world. #prato #waste #environment #italy #lucalocatelliphotoCheck out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
