4/6 - The Road Ahead — Movement: Life is newly untethered. Literally—many now work remotely or are out of a job. One in five say they relocated temporarily or permanently since the pandemic; 24% moved to a suburb, 21% moved to a rural area, and fewer people moved to cities.* We are untethered proverbially too—without the institutions and routines that shape our days, we’re treading in a choppy sea of uncertainty. Photojournalist @Strange.Victory spent the year on the road documenting the forces majeure that are shaking up this national moment: pestilence, fires, public demonstrations. “Most people feel powerless,” he says, “especially right now. In terms of larger than life factors that people can’t control. That’s a big part of the angst and ennui in the country...I’m worried about people who are staying home for months at a time, people that are alone, people that maybe don’t have a cute dog.” We worry too, both for the dogless and the health-insurance-less. But we’re also inspired, because people are not rolling over. They’re making moves. “There’s a lot of anger. That’s why you see a lot of people going into the streets. We’ve seen the biggest social movement in the history of the country with Black Lives Matter and then we’ve seen a counter movement of people that feel like their voices have been drowned out. Almost anywhere I go, at least in the bigger cities, there’s at something political happening in the streets.” *Based on a survey commissioned by Airbnb and conducted by ClearPath Strategies from September 15-19, 2020 of 1,010 US adults
