Relevancy Without media budget, this initiative relies on conveying the message through public relations. We built groundswell by connecting with the media. We ensured people were aware not only of the issue that UNESCO is fighting against, but the fact that they can experience these lost monuments and elements of history through the Reclaiming History platform. Campaign Description Over the last several years, we have seen countless historical sites destroyed by conflict and disaster. It’s not just the monuments and artifacts that are lost. We lose our history and our heritage. We set out to reclaim both. That’s why we created Reclaim History, a crowdsourced online museum aimed at restoring heritage that has been taken from the world. Here people come together from across the globe to digitally recreate, experience and learn about monuments that have been lost. People could help by uploading, sorting and masking images. They could also lend their 3D modeling skills. Once the models were uploaded, the world was invited to explore, learn and help us reclaim history. Synopsis In recent years, we’ve seen a shocking number of historic sites around the world—some dating back thousands and thousands of years—destroyed. Think the Temple of Baalshamin, which stood from 131 AD to 2015, until it was destroyed by ISIS after the Syrian Civil War or the 5th-century Buddhist and Hindu temples destroyed in Nepal by last year’s earthquake.UNESCO aims to celebrate and safeguard cultural heritage and diversity around the world. Brief:Find a way to celebrate and safeguard cultural heritage and diversity around the globe by enabling people to learn about monuments that have been lost. Objective #1: Create a way form people to connect and experience lost elements of culture. Objective #2: Create awareness, buzz and social discussion drawing attention to the UNESCO #unite4heritage global movement. Outcome While still early in the life of the project, we have received some strong results. At last count 5351 photos had been submitted. All these photos are being used to create the models and Reclaim History. After only recently launching the project has already had significant coverage on over twenty major outlets including: Fast Company, Mashable, News Channel 10, The International Business Times and Yahoo. Execution We launched the project by bringing the lost artifacts that have been digitally recreated back to the real world. The official launch saw the 3D models exhibited on the top floor of the Museum of Arts & Design in New York where a range of press and influencers were invited for the event. These reconstructed artifacts not only raised awareness of the campaign but also brought the culture that has been destroyed to everyone who visits. The launch of the website built groundswell through media coverage and social media buzz, generating shares and posts on a wide range of forums and sites. ReclaimHistory.org worked as the central hub where people can go to visit and learn more about the monuments, ensuring that we pass on our heritage, history and all of the lessons that have been learned in the past to the next generation. Strategy We identified a priority list of monuments that had been destroyed by natural disaster and conflicts. The target audience was young and old, we wanted to bring the monuments back in a range of formats to ensure broad exposure. We identified a list of over fifteen monuments to reclaim through technology and researched the most effective channels to bring back to life in. Once we had a list we used a crowd-sourced approach to access enough visual data to recreate the monuments. The goal is to go beyond your average Wikipedia page or photo exhibit. In many cases, physical restorations are impossible due to the extent of the destruction. But through crowdsourcing the digital preservation of the memory of that heritage, not only is the public provided a way to engage with lost heritage, but also to have an active, tangible role in preserving it.
