Since the 5th century B.C., the Aghor have followed the path of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction. They believe he resides in the cremation grounds, known as shmashana. Aghors must abstain from sex, a practice believed to allow them to increase their spiritual energy. In Varanasi, India, Anil, right, fathered three children before joining the cult, on the condition that he follow their philosophy in the future. The Aghor consume human flesh for some rituals—from corpses routinely found floating in the Ganges—and immerse themselves in environments where death surrounds them as part of their daily routine. They live and perform their rituals in cremation grounds, but despite their extreme practices and lifestyle, a true Aghor will never hurt another being.
