In the 1960s Erie was heavily polluted by industrial activity along its shores, coupled with widespread agriculture that surrounds it and the watershed. Excessive phosphates and nitrates from fertilizer over the years have ignited into large-scale, harmful blooms throughout the warmest months of the year. With no solution at hand, and the Earth's heat index slowly rising, this an issue with no end in sight.
