@ insidenatgeo @ fl_wildcorridor
Photo by @carltonward / Check out this big Florida black bear that recently visited one of our @PathofthePanther camera sites near Big Cypress National Preserve. He’s standing nearly seven feet tall (over 2 m) as he scratches his back on a pine tree. I’m sure it feels good, but it has another purpose. During the summer months, Florida black bears are on the move, marking their territories and looking for mates. Pine trees serve as marking posts, where bears leave bite marks, claw marks, and scent to communicate with other bears in the area. Don’t worry, the little brown dots on his fur are not ticks but seed heads from invasive Caesar weed, which can be nearly as annoying. Bears often frustrate our team when their curiosity drives them to knock over all the cameras we have set for panthers. But I also love bears and am thankful for the hope and inspiration they provide for saving the Florida Wildlife Corridor. To learn more, please follow me @CarltonWard and @PathofthePanther. The Path of the Panther project is supported by the National Geographic Society to inspire protection of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. @insidenatgeo @fl_wildcorridor
