But, that didn’t stop him from his dream of playing in the National Football League, the most popular sport in the US. Since age 8, he has been the embodiment of determination, tirelessly pushing to exceed them with unwavering support from his family. On the eve of his attempt to get signed to a team, Shaquem and his father, Terry, told his story. Using dramatic recreations, file footage and family photos, the film follows Shaquem on his journey from childhood to the NFL. It’s the story of a young man persevering against all odds, highlighting the pivotal role a father and brother can play in his life in the pursuit of his dreams. Cultural/Context information for the jury The National Football League is the most popular professional sports league in the United States. On the surface, NFL players are elite athletes who make incredible feats seem easy. But often overlooked are their uphill journeys and the determination and support that makes it all possible. Tell the jury about the casting process. Our film featured recreations of Shaquem Griffin, his twin brother, Shaquill, and his father, Terry, chronologically, from Shaquem’s early years through high school. To make the depictions as authentic as possible, we had to find actors who could pass for young versions of each of the Griffins, and who possessed a similar level of athleticism. We cast two sets of actual twins – age 14 and 18. For Terry, we cast a younger version for the early scenes, and had originally cast another talent for the later years. However, for further authenticity, we had Terry actually play himself in the recreation of training scenes during their teenage years. We had the twins play themselves during their college years. The entire casting process was done under a tight deadline that allowed for us to wrap before Shaquem had to depart for training camp, where he would attempt to make the team.
