Photos by @erintrieb / The recent fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban and the U.S. military’s August 31 withdrawal raised the stakes for thousands of Afghans who worked alongside American troops but never received their SIV (special immigration visa), needed to immigrate. The SIV program was initially approved in 2009 to assist Afghans, but a lengthy and often delayed approval process left tens of thousands—translators and other professionals employed by the U.S. military—stuck in Afghanistan, facing threats from the Taliban for their collaboration with the United States. Wahdat (surname not disclosed) served as an interpreter for the U.S. military. He's seen at his Kabul home, in 2016. He was waiting for his visa to come through, saying it was too dangerous for him to go into the city to work for fear of being recognized and targeted. In the second image, a bewildered Wahdat arrives for the first time in the U.S., at Reagan National Airport, in Washington, D.C., in July 2016. He now resides with his family in America.
